IGNOU, a premier educational Institution of India, introduced an alternative education frame work named as ‘Community Colleges’ in 2009 to provide flexible, holistic, job oriented education, to the school drop outs and late entrants into higher education. Community College aims to empower the individuals through appropriate skill development leading to gainful employment in

collaboration with the local industry and the community. This is first time that IGNOU is offering a face-to-face formal regular education program in partnership with educational agency/registered society/Trust or corporate body rooted in community-based activities.

National Agro Foundation (NAF) also wanted to utilize this platform of IGNOU community college concept, to set up its own Community College at its NAF Center For Rural Development, to offer training activity based learning for the rural community in the field of agriculture and other vocational courses which are of relevance at rural level.

NAF was amongst the institutions selected by IGNOU in the first phase to start a Community College. Thus NAF-IGNOU Community College was established in 2009. Various Certificate/Diploma/Associate Degree programs will be conducted under aegis of this Community College and the Certificate/Diploma/Associate Degree will be awarded by IGNOU.

Two courses in Agriculture have been supported by Rotary Club of Madras East (RCME). Tractors and Farm Equipment Ltd. (TAFE) has come forward to support Certificate program in Farm Machinery which is expected to start shortly.

The Community College has constituted the College Board, the Academic Committee and the Examination Committee for the smooth functioning of its academic and administrative activities. The College Board comprises of fifteen eminent members drawn across various sectors like Industry, Education, Management, Govt. Services etc. and is headed by Former Senior IAS Officer from Govt. of India.

Dr.Latha Pillai, Pro Vice Chancellor, IGNOU and Prof.P.Purushotam Rao, Dean, Faculty of Commerce, Osmania University, Hyderabad are IGNOU Representatives for the NAF-IGNOU Community College Board and Academic Committee respectively. Prof.Dr.V.A.Satyaprema, M.Sc, Ph.D, a retired Professor & Head of Dept. of Zoology from Tamil Nadu Government Collegiate Services having over 35 years of experience in academic and social

development sector is the Principal of the College. Prof.P.Kalyanasundaram, Retired Professor of Horticulture from Annamalai University having over 40 years of experience in Academics and Corporate sector is the Advisor for Agriculture Programs.
