NAF - National Agro Foundation
National Agro Foundation (NAF) is a Public Charitable Trust founded by
Bharat Ratna Shri C Subramaniam, the architect of India's first Green
Revolution. The first Green Revolution focused mainly on improvement of
genetic potential of low yielding varieties to high yielding ones thereby solving
the problem of food security during the 1960's. This was termed as a revolution
aimed at 'Seed to Grain'.
Shri C Subramaniam, while analyzing the impact of first green revolution during 90's, realized that the benefits have reached a plateauing stage. Moreover, the fruits of first green revolution had been reaped by the larger farmers with better and assured irrigation whereas the majority of the Indian farmers who are small and marginal could get marginal benefits. The productivity of various crops in India being very low, made farming a more unsustainable proposition. While examining the low productivity of the crops, he realized that the soil fertility improvement has been neglected over a period and also the weather and market information were non accessible to small / marginal farmers. A comprehensive and coordinated approach was lacking in the field of agriculture in India.
The Foundation is aimed at integrating Development, Cooperative and Corporate models for sustainable Rural Development with spedal focus on Farm sector to create a sustainable livelihood model for the masses. The farm productivity improvement is aimed at enabling availability of food for the masses at cheaper cost and increases their purchasing power leading to industrial growth.
There was an urgent need for lab to land extension of various modem technologies to the farming community (who are otherwise deprived of it) to meet the challenges of shrinking land area and growing demand (for food and other agro based products) for the bulging population in a global economy. Thus National Agro Foundation was born with an attempt to address these issues. The National Agro Foundation was envisioned by Shri Subramaniam as an institution not only to facilitate rural development in select village clusters in Tamilnadu, but also as a replicable model suitable for implementation in other states of India where marginal and poor farmers lived. This rural development model also aims at preventing rural migration and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities in the rural areas itself.
